Why Clean Mineral Makeup Starts With Better Ingredients

Why Clean Mineral Makeup Starts With Better Ingredients

The clean beauty conversation has spent years focused on what to avoid — parabens, synthetic fragrance, petroleum derivatives. That's a reasonable starting point. But the more important question is what you're putting on your skin instead.

At Odin Hollow Beauty, we formulate our makeup around a short list of high-quality botanical and mineral ingredients. Each one is there for a reason.

The base: oils that work with your skin

Squalane is one of the most skin-compatible emollients available. Derived from plants, it mirrors a lipid your skin already produces — which means it absorbs quickly, doesn't clog pores, and leaves skin feeling balanced rather than greasy. It's an ideal base for makeup because it helps product glide on smoothly and wear evenly throughout the day.

Jojoba is technically a liquid wax, not an oil — which gives it exceptional stability and a texture that closely mimics the skin's natural sebum. It conditions without heaviness and helps the formula stay consistent from application to wear.

Castor oil provides slip and adhesion. In makeup formulation, it's what helps pigment bind and stay put. It's thick, rich, and purposeful — a small amount goes a long way toward buildable, lasting coverage. You'll feel it at work in our Cream Foundation Sticks, where pigment meets skin seamlessly.

Meadowfoam seed oil is prized for its staying power. It forms a light, protective layer on the skin that helps lock in moisture and extend wear. It's also exceptionally stable, which means the formula stays fresh longer.

The texture: butters and waxes that define the feel

Mango butter is rich in fatty acids and absorbs beautifully without leaving residue. It adds a creamy, skin-softening quality to the formula — the kind of finish that feels like skincare, not just color.

Cetyl alcohol is a plant-derived fatty alcohol that acts as an emollient and thickener. Despite the name, it's nothing like the drying alcohols found in conventional products. It creates a smooth, even texture and helps the formula glide on without dragging.

Candelilla wax is a plant-based alternative to beeswax, sourced from a shrub native to northern Mexico. It gives structure and body to the formula, helping it hold its shape and apply with precision — essential in a cream multi-stick that needs to perform across cheeks, lips, and eyes.

The color: mineral pigments that perform cleanly

Iron oxides are the gold standard in clean color cosmetics. They're naturally occurring mineral pigments that provide rich, stable color without synthetic dyes. They're non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and the reason our Cream Eye Shadows deliver real color payoff without compromise.

Magnesium and zinc stearates are mineral-derived powders that improve slip, adhesion, and blendability. They help pigment distribute evenly across the skin and contribute to a soft-focus finish that diffuses light rather than sitting flat.

The finish: vitamin E

Vitamin E (tocopherol) is both an antioxidant and a natural preservative. It protects the formula from oxidation and supports skin health at the same time. It's the kind of ingredient that does double duty — quietly keeping the product stable while delivering a genuine benefit to your skin.

Formulated with intention

Every ingredient in our makeup line was chosen because it belongs there — not to extend shelf life at the expense of skin health, not to cut costs, and not because it's trending. This is what small-batch, botanically formulated makeup looks like when the ingredient list is the priority.
